May. 23rd, 2003 04:32 pmI worked seven hours today and pretty much feel okay. Therefore, I am better. This is good news after five-hour days on Wednesday and Thursday which wore me out completely.
We have a new research assistant in our lab. He's a native Basque speaker and a handball player at the national level, and he looks kind of like a J. Crew model, so obviously he's highly suitable for our study. Today I started introducing him to the terminology we use in our structured interview ("In many American cities, 'hustling' means prostitution. In Baltimore, it just means any kind of illegal or semi-legal way of making money, and 'tricking' means prostitution."), and to critical research policies ("Don't bring anything into the study room that you wouldn't want to see stolen.").
He's not afraid of our client population, which is my Number One criterion for research help. Our last RA was disconcerted by people with track marks and open sores and things, although she tried valiantly to hide it. But this guy's worked with homeless people and in a South American inpatient psychiatry unit. He responded to my war stories with a knowing laugh; I expect that he can top them. If he also really is as intelligent and enthusiastic as he appears to be, it should be a great collaboration for all concerned.
