Our holiday party went really, really well. We had about 25 people, in reasonable batches so that we got a chance to talk to them all. There was pretty much exactly the right amount of food. (We have half a gallon of cider left over, and some uncooked cheese-sausage balls - which freeze well - and a bunch of cookies, which can easily be unloaded at work.)

I wondered how I'd hold up through all the preparations and the party itself. I got exhausted about halfway through the cooking on Friday night, but I made it all the way through Saturday on pure adrenaline. I didn't really get tired until the very end of the party, at which point I just curled up on the couch with my feet up and forgot about being actively hostessy for a while. No one seemed to mind. Afterward, I took a two-hour nap on the couch in between brief bouts of cleaning. Having an afternoon party may make the morning rushed and uncomfortable, but it's certainly nice to have time to straighten up afterward so that you wake up to a clean house in the morning.

After church (children's Christmas pageant! So cute! It made me cry, because I am all hormonal and sentimental these days), we met with a member of the church who is an estate lawyer. She doesn't have a general practice anymore - she said that these days she works for one (extremely wealthy) family full-time - but she was willing to talk with us about what we need, and she's going to recommend a couple of people who can draw up our will.

It was extremely educational. She walked us through our options with the help of a vivid cast of hypothetical characters - Michael's third wife, my vindictive, lawsuit-happy ex-client - and corrected a number of misconceptions I, at least, had about Maryland law. (For example, I thought that Michael would automatically have my medical power of attorney if I were incapacitated, but apparently not.) Now we have a pretty good idea of what we want our will to say, and what we'll need to think about as our financial situation changes in the future.

I need to bake her something as an expression of gratitude.

This afternoon we finished our Christmas shopping, right in the nick of time. Presents we're mailing need to go out tomorrow. I think we did well this year, but I guess we'll see.

Now we rest, and wrap presents, and have a nice hearty warming supper (it's snowing), and go to bed early.

Sounds delightful. Wish I could have been there!

I had a Christmas party around the same time in my pregnancy, and like you, the cooking beforehand did me in.
