Chance of showers.

rivkaI am sleepy, happy, and stuffed full of food, because we had a lab lunch/baby shower today. Just the four of us - Lydia (my boss) and the two research assistants and me. And the Li'l Critter, who easily consumed as much food as any of the rest of us.
Lydia owns a house a block from the Institute, so that's where we went. She served carrots and red pepper strips with three kinds of dip: curried yogurt, red pepper and garlic (jarred, from Trader Joe's), and spicy fire-roasted red pepper (also from Trader Joe's). And cheese straws. And salad with homemade croutons and balsamic vinaigrette, and a fabulous pasta dish with chicken, green beans, sweet potatoes, and cashews. She served peach wine in the middle of the workday - I had a splash of it to flavor my mineral water, and it was delicious. And one of the RAs brought a lovely tiramisu for dessert.
Loot: two tiny nightgowns, two adorable onesies, a plush hooded towel/washcloth set with an embroidered turtle on it, a folding high chair/booster chair which is the perfect thing for our small urban house, blue and white crib bumpers, a quilted Peter Rabbit lap pad, and a blue crib sheet with pink flowers. These people know my tastes. Oh! And a bag of luxurious self-care items like a fancy organic bath brush, which are for me and not the baby.

My mom also got to go to a baby shower last night. Three women in her office are all expecting grandchildren in the next six weeks, so their coworkers threw a "grandmother's shower." She promises to send the presents on to me, but apparently there's a Peter Rabbit feeding bowl that is (a) adorable and (b) the perfect size for ice cream, so she's being tempted to keep it for herself.
The clinic where, up until last Thursday, I worked two days a week, threw me a surprise shower on my next-to-last day. I had gone from initially kind of expecting a shower (it's the kind of thing they did there) to sadly concluding that there wouldn't be one, because no one had made any suspicious attempts to block out time in my schedule. At the very last minute my main compatriot there, the other therapist, invited me to lunch. On our way out of the building we had to just "stop by the conference room to grab something," and there everyone was - pink streamers, "It's a Girl!" balloons, and all.
That shower was like an explosion in a pink factory. I got a grand total of one non-pink item of clothing, an adorable turquoise velour hoodie. All of the gift bags and ribbons and decorations were pink. Fortunately, the pink stuff was also mostly very cute. Cutest gift of all: a little family of rubber ducks, as part of a bath-themed gift bag. Mother duck (cuecuriousangel: "It could be a papa duck!") and three babies. That shower also had games - although not as bad as I've heard that shower games can be; in the most fiendish one, we were forbidden to say the word "baby" and, if we did, had to give up a token to the person who elicited it.
I feel a little weird about the whole baby shower thing, but it's also very nice. I'm enjoying how happy people are for me, and how much my pregnancy seems to bring back the best memories of their own children's birth and infancy.
