Evidence from this particular datapoint: another strategy can also be to leave the television on all the time, always tuned to something Daddy wants to watch rather than what the kids like. (I grew up into a person who really likes television as a concept, but have trouble paying attention to it even when I want to, and therefore watches almost none.)
