My friend Maria was in the MFA writing program at Iowa, and felt much the same about the intellectual rigor (or lack thereof) and general culture there. During one of the classes she taught, marriage came up. All the female students expected to get married "because everyone does it." Someone asked if Maria had changed her name when she was married, and she said of course not. One of the male students burst out, "That's because you're so aggressive!" Maria is direct and forthcoming with her opinions, yes, but apparently that gets interpreted as "feminazi" in Iowa.
