As to the last paragraph-- Yes. I actually think both "sides" have to kind of increase the level of their meta-conversational awareness, once the conversational ante has been upped. (Which is to say, it's not just the Caucasian/chromatic/white person's responsibility, although obviously, since you primarily wrote this to white people, you're primarily expecting the white people to be the ones increasing their/our awareness.)
If you're in casual conversation and the level of conversation shfits, it's easy to miss the cues. Which isn't a crime, just a truth.
