Lots of publishers have guides to local birds. There are some nifty laminated fold-up ones that you can leave around near a window, or carry along, for our areas, I'm not sure about yours. Look for Jim Arnosky books. He does no wrong, and all his picture books are nice, but look for "old crinkleroot's guide to birds." As a reading book, it's more at a 5 level, but it'll have eastern bird names. Someone on birdlovers might know something more specific to your area. (We have NO CARDINALS here, just saying.)
