A new roof ought to be a fairly non-intrusive home repair, especially in a multi-story home. We had a new roof put on a few years ago, and they tore off the roof on the first day, put a tarp on it overnight, and put the new one on the second day. They came back for a third day to wrap up a couple of things. There won't be lots of noisy things like sawing going on even if you're home during the day, just ripping and hammering, which will probably be pretty muffled if you're on the first or second floor.
On the other hand, there will be no exciting heavy machinery for Alex to watch.
