Three years, three hours, and ten (or so) minutes ago, Alexandra Calvert Wald came into the world and everything changed forever.

That was at the Children's Museum of Memphis. They had a whole "town" with different play areas: a dentist's office, a gas station, a complete miniature grocery store, a fire station with a full-size fire truck.

We did almost everything (I don't recall the gas station having much appeal), but Alex's favorite was the grocery store. It was sponsored by Kroger, and really was note-perfect in all the details: mini shopping carts made of metal rather than plastic, real grocery shelving installed lower down and closer together than usual, real (empty) product boxes on the shelves, realistic produce and meat, and - this was cool - real scanners at the checkstands. You tended to wind up with little kids shopping and bigger kids working check-out.

The thing I noticed most about the mini grocery store was that the kids were all so serious and intent. They weren't goofing off, piling up packages or bumping shopping carts - they were totally absorbed in acting out the grocery shopping experience.
