You're reminding me of some of Shirley Jackson's stories about both her daughters, though the one that immediately came to mind was when her older daughter had brought an entire invisible family of little girls on a shopping expedition and her mother got into an argument with her about how much the daughter should scold the smallest imaginary child for straying away from the group.
