I just remembered how much I said I was hungry or tired, as a small child, to avoid talking about deeper emotions.
If I was ashamed of what I was feeling, or if I needed emotional privacy, or if I just couldn't handle the additional stress of having to dredge up unpleasant feelings, it was a lot easier to say I was tired. I don't know if it's at all the same sort of thing - my memories of doing that are from when I was a good deal older, eight or nine.
