Yesterday Alex started spontaneously reciting the chalice-lighting words we use in RE, and I grabbed the camera to record it. Today she wanted to make another video of the same thing, adding some singing, so that's what we did. She recites the chalice-lighting words, sings one of the graces we say at home before dinner, and closes with a Rumi verse our church sings as a call to worship. She doesn't understand the words of the Rumi, so her delivery gets a bit... interesting.

I love that she really seems to be absorbing what she learns at church and making it part of her life.

That's so cool! It kind of cracks me up that her intonation of "Unitarian Universalism" is so reminiscent of how an adult teaches a child to pronounce too-big words.

soooo cool.

You can tell that these sentences mean something to her. Building blocks of core values. She is so damned cute too.

Oh, it's wonderful to watch her. I'll see about getting her to sing to me next time I'm over.

Yeah, it's a real challenge for a three-year-old's tongue. No wonder she decided that her stuffed dog was a Mormon, instead.

You know, I think you've given me a lot of pause to consider whether, should I become a mother, I'd adopt a family habit of attending UU so my child would have a larger spiritual framework. I haven't felt a need for a church for myself in about 15 years, even something as open as UU, but for a child... I'm reminded how formative the ritual of words and songs is.

We were already a churchgoing family before Alex was born, of course, but I do think it's particularly valuable for children and families. It gives you a framework for discussing and teaching your moral values, and expressing them in ritual.

More importantly (from my perspective), it makes your child part of a larger community of people with similar values. Most of us have friends who share our values and want to be part of our kids' lives, of course, but I think that especially as kids grow older they benefit from being able to forge relationships with adults who aren't already closer to their parents.

And just think, you're partially responsible for this! Although clearly a good piece of it is Alex's natural awesomeness.
