Ab-so-LUTE-ly never go in July or August; it's plain hideous. Possibly the best time I ever had in CW was one time I was there two or three days before Christmas, after all the "Christmas in Williamsburg" guff was over and done with. A light snow (only a couple of inches) ran off most of the few remaining tourists, and the historic area was empty. Wherever we went, the docents were all pleased as Punch to see us, and would stand and talk at length with us because there was no one else crowding in and trying to see, and we were keeping them from utter boredom watching the snow. We must have had a half-hour's chat with the master weaver about weaving and dyeing techniques, totally uninterrupted, and on the Governor's Palace tour, the group was us and ONE other couple, and that was it. And by accident, right after dinner at the King's Arms, we stepped onto the street and into the middle of a carol sing around a bonfire. No crowds, no lines, you could stand and look at whatever you wanted as long as you liked, and unhurried, un-harried docents. It was just plain delightful.
It would never be in summer . . .
