rivka: (talk about me)
[personal profile] rivka
Because I am a bad person, I forgot that I owe [livejournal.com profile] lynsaurus an icon post.

DIRECTIONS:
- reply to this post with a reason why you want me to do this meme with you, and I will pick six of your icons.
- make a post (including this info) and talk about the icons I chose.
- other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
- this will make sure you're entertained until the next meme rolls around.

[livejournal.com profile] lynsaurus picked the following icons. I appreciate that she explained why she likes them, instead of just giving me a list; I'll try to do the same if people respond to this meme.

me in a Santa hat

I don't know who started the fashion for Santa hat LJ icons, but a few years ago someone did, and someone else - whose identity I have forgotten, although [livejournal.com profile] jmhm did another one of my icons, so perhaps it was her - grafted a Santa hat onto my used-to-be-default userpic. I like this picture of me - it's still how I look in my own head, although it's got to be more than ten years old now. It was taken outside [livejournal.com profile] saoba's house during one of the infamous Callahanicon Nashville Annexes. I don't use the Santa-less version much anymore, but I like to use this one as my default icon in December.

chalice necklace

This is a picture of a pendant that I own. I used to wear it all the time, but I've snapped a couple of chains and have trouble getting around to replacing them. Michael gave me this pendant for my 31st birthday. I love it. The flaming chalice, as my regular readers probably know, is the symbol for Unitarian-Universalism. When I wore the necklace every day it got me into some interesting conversations, including one with a young woman in a deli line who had just written a paper for school on UUs and clearly hadn't imagined that she might actually encounter such an exotic beast. I use this icon when I write about religion.

royal squirrel

Back when I used to read alt.polyamory, there was a tendency for people who came in making overly broad statements about how "we" feel or what "we" need to be asked, "what do you mean 'we' - do you have a squirrel in your pocket or something?" It became a catchphrase. Alt.poly regulars started introducing their opinions with "My squirrel and I think that..." So I wound up with a stuffed squirrel. [livejournal.com profile] wcg made a little cape for her so that she would be entitled to use the royal "we" when announcing her opinions. I took her to alt.polycons with me, where I introduced her around as "Her Majesty." I still use this icon on the rare occasions that I talk about polyamory. More commonly, I use it when I am feeling cranky, serious, dignified, reproving, stand-offish, or a combination of all five.

otters

*sigh* This icon comes from when I used to have a political blog. Which I dearly miss. And which I feel bad about myself for not being able to keep up anymore. The name of the blog ("Respectful of Otters") came from a typo on a student paper, back when I was TAing Intro to Clinical Psychology in grad school: "Psychologists have a duty to be fair and respectful of otters." I still believe that to be true. I used to use this icon for posts about blogging.

Rivka P.I.

I created this icon when I started to make posts about being the Principal Investigator on my own grant. The photo came from a royalty-free stock photography site, and [livejournal.com profile] ratphooey kindly added the text for me. I use this icon to post about my research.

warning: God will smite you

I made this icon using a warning sign generator that was floating around in the web at one time. There are still some out there (here, for example), but I don't see the specific one I used. I think this picture was supposed to indicate electrocution risk, but it looked a lot more Old Testament-ish to me so I gave it an appropriate text. I use this icon when I am very angry, or when I feel utterly beaten down - it serves equally well for both the smiter and the smitten.

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] lynsaurus! This was fun.
