That's not what I'm thinking about. I grew up in a big city, and I think that people who do -- and aren't insulated from the real world by protective parents scared of whatever protective parents are scared of these days -- have better street smarts, better people skills, a better understanding of cultural differences, and are just more worldly than people who grow up in suburbia. Of course, this is my bias speaking based on the various suburbian kids I met as I was growing up.
Although life can be brutal, and there is some value in learning how to function in such an environment. But I think there are lots of places where kids will learn that -- after-school programs, sports teams, and (my particular hell) summer camp, to name a few -- and a five-day-a-week school isn't required.
