I just made us reservations to go to Chincoteague Island for a weekend in May.

Chincoteague is on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay, south of Ocean City Maryland. It's just across a short bridge from Assateague Island, a protected wildland with herds of wild ponies and beautiful Atlantic beaches.

Alex has never seen the ocean.

Because it's the off season, we were able to rent a 2-bedroom townhouse for $85/night. The townhouse complex has an indoor heated pool and hot tub. That'll be nice if we run into bad weather.

It will surely be too cold to swim in the ocean, but honestly since I'm the only one in the family who is a good swimmer that's probably just as well. I think we'll have a great time wandering on the beach, looking for seashells, and watching wildlife.

Yay.

I hope the really excellent ice cream place is still there.

... of course, it's been twenty years.

(I used to go to Chincoteague with my aunt every summer.)

I was about 13 when we camped there, and boy were there mosquitoes! They don't bite me, but they got the rest of the family. The townhouse will be a lot better. Have fun!

The mosquitoes are a big part of why we're going in May. I understand that they're not so bad early and late in the season, but in high summer they're just awful.

Oh, it's lovely there. And that should be a good time of year for a visit.

And there's reading material: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1416927832/?tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=4429137849&ref=pd_sl_93fhxa8e5p_e I loved that book, and its couple of sequels, when I was not much older than Alex is now.

We camp at Assateague every summer and I swear it's the only thing that keeps me sane the rest of the year. We camp beachside so we do ok with mosquitos by staying on the beach with a fire at night and then running like h@ll to the tent when it's bedtime. On the other hand, we have to strap our cooler shut to keep the ponies out of our food.

I think you'll really like it. The town is very picturesque and kind of sleepy. There's a lot of pony kitsch, but I doubt that will detract from the overall appeal as far as Alex is concerned.

That should be great fun.

I spent a few days there last August. I'd last been there about 25 years ago. I had a lovely time tromping around on Assateague. The bugs weren't bad.

There's a wonderful ice cream place called the Island Creamery on Maddox.

It was there as of 2005, and I cannot imagine that it would ever close for lack of business. One of the places we looked at staying was very close to it, and mentioned it on their website, so I'm pretty sure it's still going strong.

I was just about to ask if Misty and Star were on the reading list in preparation. :->
