Maybe, maybe not. From the photos, that looks like lath-and-plaster. If so, age+vibration+gravity are all you need to bring it down - we had the ceiling over our stairs come down in our last house, and investigation found no other reason. Fortunately no-one was under it at the time.
If it's been plasterboarded, then water damage looks probable. If the laths are discolored, suspect water.
