Before my mother died, I don't know much about what she was feeling or thinking. I do know that I was uncomfortable, dreaded seeing her and couldn't bear not seeing her, and worried about how we would cope if she spent months getting worse before she died. Stories of people giving hospice care to family or friends at home made me feel guilty.

Wouldn't it be awfully tempting for a person with my feelings and a little less self-awareness to project those feelings on the dying person? Maybe the relatives of the dying people need some mental health care too.
