in anthropology, those are called folk terms. and if you learn them and use them when talking to your clients, then you'll be doing exactly what you say-- conveying to them that you know where there is.

i do that somewhat in my job, too, but in the tech field, it's much more about talking to people about their cpu (you know, that big beige box, not the little chip) and keeping in mind that when they say their L: drive, they mean \\server\volume1, and not the same as my L: drive.

this is why, as someone with a b.a. in anthropology, i think that everyone who ever needs to deal with human beings who come from different cultures than they do should need to take an ethnography course.
