Snow. Six to nine inches of snow, enough to close the University of Maryland - Baltimore. Enough to cancel the 6:15am Pilates class I was foolishly planning to attend. (I'll make it there next week, [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr.) I woke up just long enough to establish that I wasn't expected anywhere, this morning, and then went back to sleep. In all, I slept the clock 'round - asleep by ten last night, and reluctantly awake at ten this morning.

I fear that I'm coming down with something. I'm tired and congested. I kept waking up thirsty in the middle of the night, which is usually a sign that I'm breathing through my mouth because I'm developing a cold. I don't want to be sick.

At least I get to stay home today and rest.

Staying home and resting sounds like just the thing.

Indeed, a good day to stay home, around here, too.

If your throat and mouth are dry from breathing open-mouthed as you sleep, you might want to get a humidifier for the bedroom. We got one--works by heat rather than sonic--and keep it pumped up all the time, and it has made a *huge* difference in how well I sleep. (I'm almost always congested.)

I'm assuming the thirst isn't due to diabetes, right?

If you think virtual chicken soup might help, I will be happy to think some at you.

I do want one, but I would think it wouldn't be good for the computer equipment. The humidifier I used as a child when I was sick left a coating of mist on everything in the room, but it sure helped me breathe.

Right. No diagnosis, no risk factors.

That's just not right.

How are llamas? Have you seen them?

I don't think the newer ultrasonic humidifiers leave that damp coating on surfaces -- Dale and I run one in our bedroom during the winter. So far, the boomboxen don't seem to have suffered from it. If you want, I can check with him to see if he'd feel safe running it in a room with computers?

You have enough energy at 6:15 in the morning to take a Pilates class?

Wow. You are my new exercise goddess. I shall call you Sol for waking up with the energy of the sun. At 6:15 all I have enough energy to do is whine about being awake and parboil myself in the shower.

I have enough energy to think about taking a Pilates class at 6:15am. I have never actually done so. Today was supposed to be the first meeting, and the snow pretty much canceled it.

I am not a morning person. At 6:15 on a normal day, I am not yet awake. But I've wanted to try Pilates for a long time... we'll see, I guess. And I'll revel in being an exercise goddess named Sol until next Friday, when we see if I can actually follow through. *grin*

If you would, that would be great. Thanks!

Snow, ick. Day off, good. Coming down with something, ick. Pilates... whooo, we have that synchronicity thang goin' on again. I'm going to start doing Pilates with a book and video and see how I like it.

Virtual tea and hugs offered.

I run a small humidifier in my room now, and it hasn't left water on anything, and my stereo/phone/iPod run fine, even when I leave the phone on top of the humidifier overnight to charge. I've got a cheapie one that runs on a filter thing that looks like circular ramen. (Cold mist.)

I'm evangelizing these days for Zicam, (http://www.zicam-priceinfo.com/zicam_art3.cfm) an OTC nasal gel containing zinc. Evidently it prevents rhinovirii from attaching to the nasal cells; the research so far indicates that it can keep you from getting a cold, and can dramatically shorten the length of a cold you have.

I've started applying it at the first sign of the sniffles, and no colds yet.

Of course, this may merely be the Magic of Placebo ... but you might give it a try, as there seems to be no downside. I find it in the drug aisle at Safeway, so it ought to be widely available. (I do prefer to use a Q-tip to apply it, though, 'cause the dispenser delivers rather more of the stuff - which has the look and feel of KY jelly - than my nostrils can hold.)

I appreciated Zicam as well - tried it for the first time a few months ago when I was developing cold symptoms, in combination with the usual echinicea and extra C whammy with good results.

Another product I like is Emergen-C (http://www.alacercorp.com/top.htm) - it's a powder you can mix with hot or cold water to make a fizzy drink. I like the raspberry flavor (and it's not bad mixed into fruit juice if you don't like the flavor alone.

I asked, and he said that he probably wouldn't put the computer directly on top of the humidifier, but otherwise doesn't see any problem with having one in the same room.
