[livejournal.com profile] curiousangel and I have been tired of living in the suburbs since... well, since very shortly after we moved there. For a while, when I was first exposed to the underside of inner city life on my internship (stepping over homeless people to get to work, clients shooting up in the bathroom, the constant noise of sirens and helicopters), it was nice to go home to someplace sterile and green. I got plenty of color and excitement at work.

That was a couple of years ago. Now I'm ready to move on - past ready. I want to live in a walking neighborhood. I want to have restaurants and shops within walking distance. I want to live close enough to work that I can have a dog. I want a nineteenth century brick rowhouse, not a soulless white box. I don't want to have to drive all the way in to Baltimore to do everything.

So we're moving. At first we thought that we'd buy a house, but our financial situation needs to be a bit more settled first. I got all glum when we figured that out, because I thought it meant another year marooned in suburbia. But fortunately - and strangely - it turns out that rents for houses downtown aren't that much more than we're paying now for our apartment. We gave two months' notice on Wednesday.

We've got appointments to look at eight houses this weekend, including a mind-boggling six houses tomorrow. Fortunately, all the houses tomorrow are in the same general area -on the south fringes (the less fashionable side) of Federal Hill. Four of them are in what looks like a two-block area. I must admit that I'm a little dubious about what would lead to four vacancies within two blocks, but I'm hoping it just means that lots of houses were bought out and rehabbed all at once, and they're starting to repopulate them. If they've all just happened to lose their tenants at once, that's probably a bad sign.

I'm so excited about the idea of moving to the city. Now we just have to hope that [livejournal.com profile] curiousangel finds a job downtown, rather than out in the suburbs somewhere.

Maybe he should look into rehabbing old row houses...

City living is wonderful, and especially so in Baltimore. I have lived most of my life in Bolton Hill and love it. [livejournal.com profile] mommybird and I both walk to work in Mt. Vernon and we do not even own a car. Good luck with your search!
