dedoc called me up, heard me cough, and suggested that I not wait until Monday to get medical attention. I called the person who's on call for my doctor, and she offered to call in a prescription for an albuterol inhaler, saying that if it didn't work I could go to the ER afterward. I told her I wasn't comfortable trying a totally new drug and type of treatment without being seen, so she amended her advice and told me to go to the ER now. So if my car starts, that's where I'm going. I'll keep you updated.

Date: 2003-05-10 01:53 pm (UTC)For the record: albuterol is the standard fast-acting asthma drug. It doesn't have a lot of side effects when used occaisionally (i.e. a few times in a couple of days for critical stuff, and occaisionally beyond that) except that as it's basically epinepherin (grr. That doesn't look right, but I don't want to look up the spelling)
Anyway: it can make you jumpy and edgy and stuff. But it wears off fairly fast (4-6 hours) and unless you have heart problems (which it can aggravate), it's pretty safe. (Unless again, there's other contraindictions and stuff, but I don't think they're huge.)
I take it intermittently for asthma stuff. Works well. (This is the one when I complain I had to take it in the middle of the night, and can't get back to sleep.)
I don't blame you for not wanting to try it without someone looking at you, though.
