From fourth through seventh grade, my best friend was a girl named Kirsten. We did everything together - I was a child of few, but very intense, friendships - until she moved to Montana the summer after seventh grade. We visited each other a couple of times, and wrote letters for a while after that, but eventually lost contact.

(The losing contact part was all my fault - most of you probably already know what a lousy correspondent I am. She wrote me, but I was... not good at writing back.)

So, apparently Kirsten has a friend named [livejournal.com profile] sanj. And [livejournal.com profile] sanj is friends with [livejournal.com profile] therealjae. And [livejournal.com profile] therealjae left a comment in this entry in [livejournal.com profile] sanj's journal, which pointed to this entry in [livejournal.com profile] therealjae's journal, and Kirsten saw my userpic appended to one of my comments, and it happened to be one of the pics that's actually a picture of me, as opposed to a stuffed squirrel or a presidential candidate or a dove, and apparently I look just as I did in the ninth grade, because she recognized me and wrote me an e-mail.

What makes it even odder is that, although [livejournal.com profile] sanj and I apparently have a lot of shared interests, we have exactly two LJ Friends in common. There's not much social overlap at all. [livejournal.com profile] therealjae just happened to link to a thread I'd commented on - and if she hadn't, Kirsten never would've found me.

How random is that?
