I, as you have surely realized, am totally NOT a girly girl. Yes, I have long hair and like to, on occasion, dress up, but as a general rule girly I am not.

So, when my childhood best friend told me she was taking her wedding party to a spa for the day I was feeling a little leary. Massage - sure, but pedicure, manicure facial? Who were you kidding???

It was one of the most relaxing days of my life. Two years later, we have just exchanged spa days as 30th birthday gifts. Screw the gender stereotypes, you deserve a reward that makes you feel good. It's not about being pretty, it's about being pampered. And man, woman, or puppy dog, we all need that once in a while.

Try it, you might like it. And haven't you been having a bit of a hard time lately? Treat yourself well.

$60 is not too much for a "WOOHOO! I'M A DOCTOR!" present.

You are buying yourself "WOOHOO! I'M A DOCTOR!" presents, aren't you? You deserve them.

That's a good point, I was not thinking of it that way. Definately, a I'm a Doctor present! I buy myself presents for all sorts of reasons and I'm not girly... Well not much.

Weeeellll, we're trying to be careful with our money. I did buy myself a lovely weekend in Minneapolis with good friends we haven't seen in a while, though, right after the defense. So I can hardly complain.

Across the street? Why, they're your *neighbors*. It would be the neighborly thing to do!

(OK, I confess: I lovelovelove spa treatments. I harbor no illusions that they will strip years off my life or make me look like a goddess, but damn, they feel so good!)

I am not girly in the least. (I'm convinced there is a reason God gave me only sons: > ) And I think facials are *great*. And hey, actors like George Clooney get them -- and he's hardly girly!

Somebody was recently commenting to me that they'd tried a facial once and hated it. Because they had "tight skin" or so. Personally, I've enjoyed the couple times I've gotten them. And hey, you can't go wrong with the massage, can you?

Well, I dunno. George Clooney is prettier than most of the women I know...

Sorry; Doctor Dude.

My suggestion would be that you not only get the day-spa treatment but preface it by watching a couple of hours of Queer Eye.

Facial feels gooooooood. I had one before my wedding. It made no difference to how I looked, as far as I could tell, but it felt gooooooood.

Don't know about facials, but $60 is a good price for a massage and if the facial comes free.. hey... :)

Dunno if you've ever had a massage - if not, do it - you will feel like your muscles have been massaged right off your bones and you will sleep like a baby!!

Definitely get it as a pressie for yourself.

But is the "queer-run" part relevant? I admit, it wouldn't even cross my mind to ask. Or care.

Sometimes you don't have to ask. Or, well, at least, sometimes I don't have to ask. At any rate, the place is plastered with rainbow flags and information about gay community events.

It's relevant in that it makes me feel more comfortable. I feel really awkward and incompetent with regard to traditional sex-role expectations of... female beauty competence, I guess. I feel much more relaxed and accepted at this salon because it's clear from the moment you walk up to the door that they're not attached to traditional gender baggage.

Well, THAT is definitely a reason to care about it. While I haven't done spa treatments myself, I couldn't see doing something that intimate where I wasn't comfortable.

Think of it as pampering.

I rarely wear nail polish but once in a while I go and have a manacure. 1) It gets my cuticles in better shape 2) it is so so relaxing

Normally I'd want to say both "Yes" and "Dude, grow up about the whole gender stereotypes thing" to the question of being too girly, but perhaps the fact it's a queer-run salon will make the difference...
