We went shopping for hurricane supplies this evening. I still wasn't sure how much would be overkill, so I made my basic criterion "will I be embarrassed if I buy this and then the storm misses us?"

We bought: bottled water, a second flashlight, flashlight batteries, batteries for my Walkman (it has a radio), crackers, sharp cheddar cheese, peanut butter with preservatives so it doesn't need refrigeration, juice, canned fruit, canned soup, canned fish, candles, chocolate, and roasted peanuts. This we added to our stock of hurricane-appropriate supplies already in the cupboard, which includes more candles, more canned fruit and soup, dried fruit, canned beans, chips, cereal, breakfast bars, crackers, fresh vegetables, bleach, masking tape, the first flashlight, and plastic bags.

So of course we came home and found that Isabel had already been downgraded to a Cat 3.

Yay, first criterion! I am ashamed of buying nothing.

I said yesterday to my mother that I was going to go pick up bottled water, a few canned goods and batteries today. She laughed at me and said that I had nothing to worry about.

I ignored her, and went to get batteries and water and so on today. I know how things work down here...and if I waited, I'd have gotten nothing.

The Superfresh was out of "D" batteries and bottled water. Fortunately, the Rite Aid near our house still had plenty of batteries, and some water.

Four stores, until I ended up at the Giant, where I got batteries...they were nearly out of water, but I did get enough for me, and enough for the elderly woman who I help out. What I haven't found for her yet is a flashlight of the appropriate size...

Mom suggested a gas station for the batteries...she says that's where she finally found some.

Hooray for your first criterion.

Please, please teach it to the fools to your southwest a ways who seem to be of the opinion that a snowflake sighting within fifty miles demands that they buy all the milk and bread and stockpile it. ;)

Don't forget the toilet paper...

I was trying to explain this phenomena to my Mom, but she just didn't get it...

Don't forget eggs. A friend of mine once dubbed those "french toast emergencies."

Hey -- better safe than sorry; I'm just glad you guys'll be fine!

That sounds like a good stock of stuff to have! We've never had any really predictable emergencies here, so all of our supplies have been ad-hoc. When the east coast blackout hit, I'd been trying to work through our stores of stuff around the kitchen in preparation for a restocking, so we had next to no food in the house. I'm glad that it only lasted 24 hours here. ;)

I'm pleased to see chocolate on your list. I like a woman who has her priorities straight.

I would like to point out that we're not yet finished with our shopping, as I am going to head out tomorrow to replenish our stock of beer and wine. We consciously decided to wait until tomorrow, as we had done entirely too much shopping already this evening. :)

A good single-malt ought to be in there somewhere, too, don't you think? Strictly for medicinal purposes, of course.

I can't believe you would even think that we might not have single malts in the house already.

You're right. I'm so ashamed.

I've just poured myself a wee dram of Caol Ila in penance.

I thought of that, but waiting out the storm with just me and a bottle of wine sounds like it would make one drunk girl...

I do have a couple of chardonay splits in the house and another white wine, although I don't remember what-probably a pinot grigot of some sort...

Pretty good list. We've got tons of candles anyway, and lots of matches, and wood for the fireplace and all (I just have to shlep it indoors in time), so the only hurricane supplies I've picked up so far are a huge bag of bagels and a big tub of cream cheese. I'm planning on running the bread machine a couple of times between now & then, though.

We're way north of the danger zone, I realize, but my town's power grid is pretty wonky, and we've lost power for days at a time for much smaller reasons than a hurricane passing a few hundred miles away.

Good luck getting through Isabel's passage.

Heh.

I sort of did the Y2K-supply-buying-thing, and got myself a propane lamp and stove -- I told myself that they'd come in handy in a power outage whether Y2K or thunderstorm.

I finally used the lantern for the first time a couple of months ago.

Just make sure you have a real connected-to-the-wall telephone. Cell phones and cordless phones may have problems if electricity goes out over a wide area.

Down to Cat 2, now, but it might strengthen again.

In the meantime, you have sensible things that you would use anyhow.
