...I now have a weblog in addition to my journal.

Very cool. And I suspect you'll find lots of grist for the mill during your daily Dean searching!

And an impressive start it is, too!

I can read your posts there, but I can neither read nor leave comments. I get a javascript error. Probably nothing you can do about it, given the blogspot software, but I figured you'd want to know.

I'm using a third-party comment system, because the free version of Blogger doesn't support comments. How are you for weblog comments in general? Does this seem to be a me-specific problem?

It varies. I can leave comments in, for example, Lis Riba's blog or piranha's blog or Real Live Preacher's blog.

to the best of my knowledge, blogger doesn't support comments, period. i have at times had a paid blogger account, and i never saw an option for comments.

(now i have to go look, however.)

What is the difference?

I'm intending to have my weblog be more focused on commentary about ideas and current events, and my journal to be more focused on my own life, my thoughts and feelings, and social interactions with my friends.

The weblog is still going to be very much filtered through my opinions, but I'm intending it to show more of my public face. Hopefully it will be interesting to people who don't actually know me.

Lots of people combine both journal and weblog functions on one site, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. But for me, I've found myself reluctant to post straight-up commentary in my LJ because it doesn't fit in so well with my usual posting style. Contrariwise, I might want people I know through a political organization to see some of my political posts, but not want them to see my personal angst. That's why I want one of each.

So if I understand well, it is you who makes the difference, they are not necessarily different by definition?

Well, kind of. Obviously, there's no rule about what you can post in your journal or your weblog. But I think that it is true that, for the most part, weblogs tend to be more commentary-oriented. (Some examples: The Daily Kos (http://www.dailykos.com/), Electrolite (http://nielsenhayden.com/electrolite/), Not Geniuses (http://www.notgeniuses.com/).)

So, just out of curiousity (I am not a native speaker, hence my original question), theoretically it would be more appropriate to write my short stories and columns elsewhere and leave the more personal accounts over here?

Dr. R has the right of it, I think -- LJ lends itself to more personal writing, comments for friends and acquaintances.

I split my writing between LJ and weblog because I wanted features for my commentary that LJ just didn't support, like trackback ability to other posts and the like. On the other hand, if I want to talk about personal stuff, LJ allows me to restrict those posts to friends' lists if I prefer.

It's not a hard-and-fast rule by any means. But that's how it worked out for me, and looks like Dr. Rivka came to many o the same conclusions.

Congrats on a successful launch, Honored Colleague! *delights*

Fascinating! Thank you.

Now, if I can just figure out a way to make the bookmark portable so that I can access it no matter where I am...
