Dear Dr. Wald:

I am pleased to inform you that your submission entitled, "PSYCHOSOCIAL CORRELATES OF SPIRITUALITY AND FORGIVENESS AMONG INNER CITY HIV PATIENTS" has been selected for presentation as an oral paper at the Society of Behavioral Medicine's 25th Anniversary Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions, which will be held March 24-27 at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland.

Your presentation will be within Paper Session #05 and will be identified as such in the program. Your presentation has been scheduled for Thursday, March 25, 2004 at 2:30 p.m.-2:45 p.m. at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel. Each oral paper is scheduled for 15 minutes (10 minutes for presentation, approximately 5 minutes for questions).

Congratulations on an excellent submission. We look forward to seeing you in Baltimore!

This is the premier conference in my field, and although I've had lots of posters accepted, I've never been invited to do an oral presentation there before. I'll be giving a poster too, later the same evening, called "TRANSMISSION RISK BEHAVIORS OF INNER-CITY HIV PATIENTS: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PREVENTION OF HIV BIODISPARITY." But a paper, yay! Exposure!

I think I'm going to preen now. *preen* *preen*

Yay, exposure!

Great! Wonderful! "Giving a poster" is an odd combination of words.

It is, but I'm not sure how else to put it. A "poster" is a 4x6' bulletin board, on which I'll put up information about my study. Then I'll stand by it for a few hours, and with any luck people will come by, read it, and ask me questions.

Woo hoo indeed! Does that conference give the presenting authors ribbons to wear on their badges, author breakfast, or other helpful ways to brag?

Congratulations! That's a significant step forward for you. And what a nice ending to your year, to get this notice.

(Tangentially, when I took Business Communication, the phrase "I am pleased to inform you" was so thoroughly drilled out of me that I automatically flinch to see it. The rationale was, "the reader doesn't *care* what pleases me, s/he wants to know what's in it for him/her, so start with, 'Congratulations!' or something similar.")

It's especially cool when it's used by people who aren't doing it because they're all excited about me finishing and want to make me happy. These people at SBM think it's my real title!

Oh, I know. For years, it made me grin when I got mail addressed to Dr. M from someone besides my mother.
And I still kinda like it every time, 7+ years later.

Thanks! I've posted about the forgiveness study here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/rivka/155480.html). I don't have anything actually written up about the transmission risk behavior study, but I'll need something by March. I'll probably post about it sometime between now and then.
