That's what happened to me with NaNoWriMo. ;) I would finish my writing for the day and then look at the word count rankings for everyone in Toronto in descending order and think, "That guy's only 423 words ahead of me. I can write 424 more words," etc.
It was the threshold being so low, which made it seem I might have written a tad more than that.
On the more serious side, it amused me, but I've not see the code anywhere, just the results, so I've not managed how to run it on my own journal (which probably has a much smaller readership, and even smaller postership).
