Someone from administration was just down here.

They're planning to move two other people in to share my office.

They've been planning this for a month. The move would have to happen in less than a week. This is the first that it's been mentioned to either me or my boss.

They do not feel that it's the Institute's responsibility to provide storage for the several filing cabinets' worth of data that would be misplaced or to figure out where we'll put the people we're about to hire when the grant money comes in.

This. Is. FUCKING. Ridiculous.

Shoot today and bury it in the crawlspace.

I'm sorry.

I think if I were in your shoes I would choose to go the route I've seen [livejournal.com profile] misia go. When the stakes are something physical, make them the person's problem who claims it isn't. In this case, I'd get help and physically move the filing cabinets into that person's office, on top of their desk. Or move into their office with the people you intend to hire. Make it directly and unequivocally their problem.

I know I'm a bit over the top sometimes, but I think in cases like this where someone else has already gone over the top, such a reply is totally appropriate.

I believe [livejournal.com profile] misia once sat on a financial office goon's desk until e took care of her complaint.

Sadly, the filing cabinets are built in to the modular desk unit thingy. And we can't just move the data in stacks of paper, because it's confidential and we have a duty to safeguard it in privacy.

Gnnngh.

I know Mondays generally suck but this one is just too over the top. If I could locate the Universal Complaint Window for you I'd be filling out forms like mad on your behalf.

"Excuse me, sir? This Monday is exceeding all accepted tolerances and is clearly defective. I'd like to return it for something that is more in my size."

I greatly admire this paragraph.

Wow. That sucketh. In fact (to paraphrase [livejournal.com profile] saoba), that exceedeth allowable tolerances for maximum suckitude per Monday.

Does your boss have the intestinal fortitude to tell "them" that the answer is "no"? As in, "no, you can't put two more people in this office"? Or at least to tell the folks from Facilities that "no, you can't remove those built-in filing cabinets because they still contain privacy-restricted information"?

Your last line says it all, and I can offer nothing but sympathy, sadly.
