Workday bad news: Last night, it seems, they transferred the Institute's computer system from the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute's servers to the University of Maryland School of Medicine's servers.

Today, it seems, none of the Institute's IT staff are here. Which is a problem, because we can't connect to the public drives, the hospital extranet, the electronic medical records, or the network printers. There is very little that I can actually do right now. I know that everyone likes a five-day weekend, and more than half the faculty isn't here either... but couldn't they have left somebody to handle the inevitable transition problems?

Workday good news: In the hospital cafeteria, I got extra shrimp in my paella for being the first person today to actually pronounce it correctly.

Amazon.com shipped me a package on the 30th of June. After I placed the order, they sent me an apologetic e-mail saying that I might not get my item until July 12th, and giving me a link to track the package.

On July 2, the USPS tracking system showed that my package was "in transit" at Capitol Heights, Maryland. I snickered, remembering Amazon's apology about the "delay." Did they really think it would take ten days to get here from Capitol Heights?

On July 3, the USPS tracking system showed that my package left Capitol Heights to travel the lengthy distance to Baltimore.

That was the last update. The days keep ticking by, with no package and no new information in the tracking system.

I now actually begin to believe that my package may take ten days to get to me, from Capitol Heights Maryland. Thirty-five miles away.

Sheesh.
