Workday bad news: Last night, it seems, they transferred the Institute's computer system from the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute's servers to the University of Maryland School of Medicine's servers.

Today, it seems, none of the Institute's IT staff are here. Which is a problem, because we can't connect to the public drives, the hospital extranet, the electronic medical records, or the network printers. There is very little that I can actually do right now. I know that everyone likes a five-day weekend, and more than half the faculty isn't here either... but couldn't they have left somebody to handle the inevitable transition problems?

Workday good news: In the hospital cafeteria, I got extra shrimp in my paella for being the first person today to actually pronounce it correctly.

Oops!

So, any news on the house front?

So what is the correct pronunciation? I've been guessing "pai-eh-a", but it does sound pretentious. (And really very pretentious if wrong.)

I actually can't make claims to pronounce it correctly correctly, because I'm sure my accent completely sucks. But in Baltimore MD, "pie-AY-uh" was good enough for extra shrimp. (Everyone else apparently said "pay-EL-la.")

That's how I'd pronounce it--that's three years of high school Spanish, mostly Castilian, with an overlay of the local Nuyorican and Dominican, but the vowels are consistent among those, as is the pronunciation of "ll" and where to accent things. (Castilians do weird things to s's, and Puerto Ricans to y's.)

Me too, from further South, but I don't think I had paella until I moved up this way.

What kind of IT department makes a major change and then takes the day off?

Aaaauuuugggghhh!

Extra shrimp is very good, indeed.

Oh that's just classic. I thank god every day that we have an IT staff that actually sort of gets us. (One of them did accidentally delete half our DNS servers the other day, but at least they were around to fix it -- and it was a Friday afternoon so not too many people actually noticed.)
