I was trying to find something in the archives, and I tripped over a meme somebody had left out. Tried to brace myself, but I the poll I grabbed came loose, and next thing I knew, servers were toppling over like a line of dominoes.
I think I've got everything back the way it was, but folks might want to doublecheck their friends list, as they might have gotten mixed around in all the confusion.
It just goes to show that one datacenter isn't enough for "true" 24-by-7-by-365 service.
When I was working at Fidelity Investment's Internet Operations Center, we had a hard-and-fast requirement that every part of our application had to run on at least two separate boxes, in separate datacenters. 'Twas a pain to code, and another pain to test. But, after hearing a few horror stories of backhoes, lightning, viruses, etc. taking out entire buildings at a time, it kinda made sense, somehow ...
