Respectful of Otters (http://respectfulofotters.blogspot.com) just got linked to in Slate. (http://slate.msn.com/id/2115110/) Congratulations!
Now I want to hide under the bed, but my belly won't fit. I suppose you could get a bunk bed and put a reeeeealy long bedskirt around the edge of the top bunk.
I also thought it was a terrific post. I thought of it today while watching local TV news--the story was called "Fight for Life" and I thought, but she isn't even really alive in any meaningful way, and never can be. Yours is one of the few (only?) things I've seen that actually discusses the medical issues.
And to be linked to by Slate--how cool is that? You rock!
Might give you a couple of days grace period for the delivery. But after that, we expect you to be back on the job! Aren't you s'posed to be one of those SuperWomen or something?!?!?!
The thing this kind of recognition buys you, as I see it (and congrats), is that you can claim sheer volume, shut down comments and fail to reply to e-mail (except perhaps through form letter if you wish).
Which is like hiding under the bed, but a bit more professional. :>
I am glad to see the link, although I missed it in just reading the article. Thanks for pointing it out. (I had already looked at your site to see what your take on the whole mess was, which I thought was the best that went into the medical issues.)
703 in the last hour, 3323 since midnight. They're also coming in substantial numbers from Matthew Yglesias. I assume, in fact, that that's how Slate found me in the first place.
While it's still very rare to have the mainstream media link to blog posts, it's getting more common.
It looks like more mainstream media sites are now keeping blogs of their own. I've got two more mainstream links this morning: Eric Zorn (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/ericzorn/weblog/) at the Chicago Tribune, and Will somebody at MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6409077/). So we'll see.
Ignoring the politics for a moment, it seems to me that the underlying problem is that society's popular definition of "death" is increasingly being made obsolete by technology.
Coolio! I think you should use your newfound status to promote all those other women bloggers no one can find! This is a purely disinterested suggestion on my part as I haven't written anything of substance in months now and so have nothing to promote. You really rock!
Although C-SPAN may seem like a straight shooter, blogs across the political spectrum, from RESPECTFUL OF OTTERS to ELEPHANTSBUS, lambasted the channel last week for planning to "balance" its coverage of a lecture by Holocaust scholar Deborah Lipstadt with a speech by Holocaust denier David Irving, who has argued that the Nazis' crimes have been overplayed. Amid the kerfuffle, some conservative bloggers even found a way to blame Bill Clinton--for how far the once noble C-SPAN has fallen--while LITTLE GREEN FOOTBALLS featured the best one-liners: e.g., "What's next, bin Laden rebutting Wolfowitz?"

Now even more people will see why so many of us admire your thinking so much. :)

This is a good thing, because that means they'll be forced to notice you're a <gasp> woman blogger.
