Alex has gained two ounces since Thursday. So the new program of supplementing each feeding with expressed breast milk really works, even if it does mean that I occasionally feel the urge to moo.

Yay.

yay!

[profile] patgreene used to do this early-on with James (who is now 14 and 5'10"...). She'd also use a pump to express milk at her law firm... she stored it in their breakroom refrigerator, which was OK until some other associates used it in coffee. Er.

I do have to admit, it would weird me out to be thinking "this was produced by my co-worker's body", and so, yes, I understand the point. But part of me is fighting down the urge to say something like "EWWW! Everyone knows PEOPLE aren't supposed to drink *THAT*!" and go on a riff about how it's only natural to drink milk that comes from a completely different species.

Heh. We were finding stray packets in the freezer *years* after I stopped breastfeeding. My husband suggested making a custard.

Actually, even funnier than that was the partner who thought that the weird buzzing noise in the ladies room (the only real place I could pump) was someone using a vibrator.

Wonderful news! Congratulations (on everything except the urge to moo. I'm not sure where that sits on the congratulatory scale, so I'll take the safe course of pretending I didn't notice. And then, because it's me, ruin the effect by talking about it for *much* longer than could possibly be funny).

That's awesome! Glad to hear it.

At least it sounds like you're making plenty of milk - as long as you can keep milk supply up the latching etc will almost certainly get better with time. Low supply issues are much harder to deal with.

Moo.

(Moo is just one of our household words for some reason - possibly because of the secret cow level of Diablo II. The mooing is so deadpan.)

When I was about 9 and my younger brother was a baby, our family conversation involved a (fake) group of servants--Paula the Upstairs Maid, Francis the Gardner, somebody I don't remember the Kitchenmaid, and so forth--all of which were really my father (or me and my other brother).

We also had Momboobie the wet nurse. Guess who she was. :)

Nothing wrong with that, especially from the one who has taught the world (or at least the blogosphere) to be Respectful of Udders ...

Yay! Am glad for you.

Have been telling everyone (ok, Richard, Tim & Peter a.k.a my family-people) about your 36J-ness and associated problems, and they have all reacted with extreme fear. Ok, well, Tim & Peter are gay, and so women's bits are scary in any case - but we have been generally concerned about how you'd actually walk without falling over. When I was a baby my mum's breasts were apparently as big as my dad's head - it sounds like you might have exceeded that. Congratz?!

Just be careful not to strain your back when expressing. The temptation is to lean forward, and it can be easiest to do leaning forward, and combined with all the other baby-lifting stresses on the back this can be un-good.

But it's so great that she's gaining.

Hathor is not only the Cow Goddess, she's also the Goddess of Love and Beauty (not all cultures regard cows as unsightly...in ancient Ireland, for example, calling a young woman a "heifer" was a compliment).

Glad to hear your good news.

I'm not sure why you resist the urge to moo. It will probably help relax your abdomen, besides being a commentary Michael should hear!

Breastfeeding

Hurrah for weight gain! Just a few things to say, since it's after midnight and this is sleeping itmeI'm using:

1) The weight charts they use to see if she's gaining properly for her centile are almost guaranteed to have been developed using mostly formula fed babies, who have totally different weight gain patterns to breastfed babies. You can ask them about this if it might help.

2) I moo sometimes, and I almost never pump.

3) Linnea never took more than 10 minutes for a feed until she started nursing for joy rather than for food.

4) Engorged breasts (mine were "something larger than a 36DD but that was the largest bra we had") are harder to latch onto - it's not necessarily the absolute size of them, but also the way engorged breasts curve around the nipple. God invented self-heating handwarming gel packs specifically to help with this. Send someone to a walking or camping shop to get some.

5) Avent Avent Avent, it's the only way to be sure.

6) When it's good, it's very very good - so it's worth keeping it up if you can stand it without dreading every feed or something. Feeding Linnea is the high point of my day now.

7) Weigh her with a diaper on. It's only an accident of time if you weigh her before or after a bowel movement, after all - and they can weigh an ounce or two in themselves.

8) I said diaper. Augh. I'm becoming American in bullet points.

9) Yay! Alex is the greatest and you look so good in your photos and you sound so happy with each other and isn't she the best thing in the whole world ever and April babies are just vastly superior to all the other babies and isn't she gorgeous?

*sniff*

I will add you back to my friends list soon - it's not that I don't love you, you know...

A.
