[livejournal.com profile] fourgates gave Alex some CDs, including For the Kids, a collection of children's music recorded by pop stars. I've been listening to that one a lot - what's not to like about the Barenaked Ladies singing "La La La La Lemon," or Five for Fighting singing something called "The Hoppity Song"?

It's inspired me to go through my iTunes collection and start work on a couple of mix CDs for Alex. I've got the contents of two CDs sorted out, although I haven't decided on a track order yet. What would you put on CDs for a baby? (Extra points if you're willing to send me a copy.)

Why Does the Sun Shine? - They Might Be Giants
Punky's Dilemma - Simon & Garfunkel

The One Who Knows by Dar Williams

Lyrics:

Time it was I had a dream
And you're that dream come true.
If I had the world to give
I'd give it all to you.
I'll take you to the mountains,
I will take you to the sea.
I'll show you how this life became a miracle to me.

You'll fly away, but take my hand until that day.
So when they ask how far love goes
When my job's done you'll be the one who knows.

All the things you treasure most
will be the hardest won.
I will watch you struggle long
before the answers come.
But I won't make it harder,
I'll be there to cheer you on.
I'll shine the light that guides you down
The road you're walking on.

You'll fly away, but take my hand until that day.
So when they ask how far love goes
When my job's done you'll be the one who knows.

Before the mountains call to you,
before you leave this home,
Wanna teach your heart to trust
As I will teach my own.
But sometimes I will ask the moon
Where it shined upon you last
And shake my head and laugh and say
It all went by so fast.

You'll fly away, but take my hand until that day.
So when they ask how far love goes
When my job's done you'll be the one who knows.

Is it weird of me to sing the chorus of Gandhi/Buddha to my baby? I know it's supposed to be a romantic song, but I really do feel entirely that lucky.

(For those of you who are not [livejournal.com profile] minnaleigh and therefore may not know the song:

I must've been Gandhi, or Buddha, or someone like that
I must've saved lives by the hundreds everywhere I went
I must've brought rest to the restless, fed the hungry too
I must've been something great, to get to have you.)

I'm not familiar with the song, but one of the things that has most surprised me about becoming a mom is just how much my parental love towards Liam has felt like romantic love.

My love for Alex is surprisingly physical. I love to just sit with my nose buried in her hair, smelling her. She's got the best scent in the world.

The other thing about loving Alex is that it's taught me the meaning of the word "unconditional." My love for her knows no reason. It has no basis in anything she does or promises or is. My love for her just is, overwhelming me.

Wow, that's really perfect. Are you willing to share it?

I would recommend Dar's ballad, "We Learned the Sea":

I am the captain and I have been told
That tomorrow we land and my ship has been sold
Now losing this boat is worth scarce a mention
I think of the crew, most of all the first ensign
For all we learned the sea

Guiding a ship, it takes more than your skill
It’s the compass inside it’s the strength of your will
The first ensign watched as tempests all tried me
I sang in the wind as if God were beside me
For all we learned the sea

You take the wheel one more time like I showed you
We’ve reached the strait once even I could not go through

I am the captain and I have been told
But I am not shaken, I am eight years old
And you are still young, but you’ll understand
That the stars of the sea are the same for the land
And we came to learn the sea
