Whew.

According to the orthopedist, my artificial hip looks exactly the way it did in 1997. Hasn't moved a millimeter. There's some bone loss around the plastic socket - he said that the plastic can cause bone to dissolve, which I don't remember anyone telling me when I had the thing put in. But it's not enough to cause concern.

He thinks the problem is muscle weakness. After his exam, I'm inclined to agree. I had more trouble than I'd expected moving my leg the way he asked me to, not because the joint hurt but because the muscles did. So he's prescribed physical therapy, and I have to think of a method of exercise that accomodates Alex. (I'd love to hear from other mothers of babies, on that matter.)

I am quite relieved.

Yay for good bone news! :-)

There are actually "exercise with your baby" classes out there for new mothers, believe it or not.

Oh, this is very good to hear. I'm so glad it wasn't anything more serious.

Would walking work as a baby-friendly form of exercise?

In reasonably good weather, I can take her out in the stroller (or the sling, to add an upper-body workout). Even in chilly, sunny weather I can bundle her up. But it doesn't seem very fair to take her out if it rains every day of the week, or if it's very cold. This summer there would be whole weeks that we couldn't go for a walk because the temperature was over 90 degrees and the air quality was poor.

I might be able to walk in the late evening, after Alex is bed and Michael and I have had dinner. I'd have to pick and choose where to go, though, for safety reasons.

There is a mall here that has a lot of empty store fronts, but gets tons of mall walkers (and, in fact, caters to the walkers, by posting mile markers and suchlike). Although it wouldn't be that exciting, I keep thinking I should go there for walks when the weather gets bad here.

Oh, thanks be.

(There's a cake cooling on the stove top even now...)

I immediately envisioned a baby in a floating donut while Mama does low-impact water exercises. No idea whether that would work well for either of you.

I've seen floating lounge chairs; I wonder if they make floating baby carriers!

They certainly do.

Although I can't recommend specific exercises (walking is mine), I can add my anecdote about hip pain. I've never had any trouble with my hips, including after having my son who is now almost three. But with my four-month-old daughter I have had quite a bit of pain in my right hip, especially in the morning after sleeping in the same position for a while.

I spoke to a friend who's a physiotherapist and between the two of us we deduced that it was probably a result of those pregnancy-loosened pelvic muscles struggling to get back to "normal". It's gotten better over time and hardly bothers me at all now, as long as I keep walking regularly.

(Hi, by the way. I think I saw your LJ through some friend of [livejournal.com profile] griffen's and enjoyed your pregnancy posts and birth story very much.)

Exercise with baby

[personal profile] ailbhe 2005-10-28 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Swimming, and all sorts of lying on the floor games, and walking - well-wrapped up, she might love walking in windy, rainy weather - I know Linnea adored strong wind from when she was about 3 months old. She can lie next to you on the floor while you do raised-leg exercises and wiggle your toes; it's a game Linnea and I play for the toe-ish-ness rather than for the exercise, but it could be adapted.

I am very relieved it's just exercise. Congratulations on the good news.

Exercise in the bath after she's gone to bed?

Dance! I do a lot of dancing at home holding Linnea.

Having written this, I realise I get a lot of exercise. Heh.

OTOH, Squeaky would get ridiculous gas from lots of wind. But then she seemed to get gas from a lot of things normal kids handled.

I am pleased for you.

There exists a book on doing yoga with your cat. I'm almost certain this was written as a parody of a book about doing yoga with your baby... Oh look, amazon.com has a whole section of post-pregnancy workouts, some of which apparently involve the TV showing pictures amusing to the small one, while others use the baby as a weight for building muscle tone. I'm sure that, with the aid of a physio, you can adapt any of these premade workouts to something suitable for you.

Also, these people are based in New York, but there might be a similar organisation in Baltimore. This one only mentions pre-natal, but may do post- as well.

I second the suggestion about swimming and aqua aerobics. Various places do this either with a creche, or a floaty baby carrier.

Good luck!

further Google-fu

Stroller Strides have sessions in Baltimore.

btw, the reason I'm Googling & supplying links is that I figured you had enough to do already, not that I think you're incapable of doing a simple web search :)

By funny coincidence, just after you posted this my friend Dagmar at infant story hour said that she does Stroller Strides. She does a session at the zoo, which sounds fun, but there's another one that's accessible by bus from our house, which would mean not having to drive
Michael to work. Hm.
