rivkaThe bus I took to work this morning had two large placards posted at the front of the seating area. Under the Maryland Transit Administration logo was a brief obituary for Rosa Parks, focusing (of course) on her role in the Montgomery bus boycott.
There was no mention of Baltimore's history of segregated buses, thus creating the impression that segregation was a nasty thing that the Deep South did. But it was still a pleasant surprise to see the tribute.
I hadn't realized that Rosa Parks was the first woman ever to lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda. When they removed her casket afterward for the memorial service, it processed followed by an honor guard of buses, including a vintage 1950s Metropolitan bus draped in black. Someone had a nice sense of theater, there.
