It's a hard thing when your developing physical abilities outstrip your ability to understand cause and effect.

Alex crawled over to the media unit, sat up, and opened the bottom drawer. That was fun, so she closed it again. After a couple of repetitions, she realized that it would be a lot easier to open and close the drawer if she held on to the top edge, rather than the handle.

She closed the drawer on her fingers, and gave a yelp of pain. And before I could get across the room to her, she opened it again, and closed it on her fingers again. Harder.

This time she cried hard. Poor dear, she just had no idea that doing it again would hurt again.

Poor li'l baby!!! Papa will kiss those bruised little fingers when he gets home, and that will make it feel all better. I hope.

There's no bruise, fortunately, but her fingers do look like they're in need of a Papa-kiss.

(Aw! Critter in a Santa hat!)

I believe I've mentioned the story of my niece Winter when she was somewhere around two and a half, I believe it was.

She was walking over to my parents' recycling bin, and pulling out paper towel roll tubes, and whacking herself on the head with them, apparently being entertained by the "BONK" sound it made.

This was fun for a while. And then she picked up a wooden massage roller of approximately the same diameter and length.

And she whacked herself on the head with it, making a much more solid "WHUMP" sort of sound than the hollow "BONK" of the paper towel rolls.

She wrinkled up her face in confusion and probably some pain, and rubbed her head. She looked at the massage roller in her hand, puzzled.

And whacked herself on the head a second time.

Seeing that it was repeatable, her face cleared as she apparently felt that she now understood the situation, she dropped the roller, and ran off to do something else.

Poor Alex.

I will see, that in my experience, they learn the lessons pretty darn quickly.

Oh, poor baby! Just *reading* that made my mouth pucker up ready to suck her fingers better. And the drawer still wouldn't close properly, even though she did it harder, as well!

Another entry for the baby book: Alex's first experience with natural consequences!

Poor little thing. And poor [livejournal.com profile] rivka. It's so hard to see your kids get hurt.

Oh, *ow*. Poor baby... perhaps her first time to discover that "learning experiences" can be painful, however valuable.

On the other hand... you could look at it as an early use of the scientific method. Because once could have just been a random event, but twice suggests some correlation.

In the meantime, though, owie. Poor baby!
