It's the motherboard. Michael had very thoughtfully already scouted out replacement options before he called me to tell me so. With luck, my new computer will be here by the end of the week.

*sigh*

Owie. My sympathies -- we had to do one of those unexpected computer purchases last summer.

My mom asked us, "Can't two of you share?"

All three of us just looked at her...

We think so, yes. Mercifully. I am making all kinds of resolutions to be better at backing things up in the future, but even so, I'm unlikely to ever back up aaaaaaall my music... until I get an iPod.

I hope so!

When I had the Tragic Wine-Spilling Incident, it was hoped that the hard drive had escaped damage, but it was not to be. Fortunately I had the iPod, and was able to download software to get the songs back onto the G4. But I lost everything else, including two months worth of timesheets, a bunch of images and a whole lot of email I wanted to keep.

I'll keep my fingers crossed!

I'm using an external USB hard drive for backup. It's simple to connect and easy to run the backup (flip up a command line window and type "xcopy c:\*.* e:\tim\*.* /c /d /e /k /r /y", and that's it done) which means it gets done regularly.

I got this about 5 weeks ago: two weeks ago my HDD siezed without warning. I lost about a week's worth of Usenet, which I was able to recover without difficulty.

And it backs up everything.

Oh yes - when you install something, copy the contents of the installation CD to the HDD. Saves a lot of cursing and looking for boxes in the garage...

HDD space is cheap and plentiful these days.
