Amazon.com shipped me a package on the 30th of June. After I placed the order, they sent me an apologetic e-mail saying that I might not get my item until July 12th, and giving me a link to track the package.

On July 2, the USPS tracking system showed that my package was "in transit" at Capitol Heights, Maryland. I snickered, remembering Amazon's apology about the "delay." Did they really think it would take ten days to get here from Capitol Heights?

On July 3, the USPS tracking system showed that my package left Capitol Heights to travel the lengthy distance to Baltimore.

That was the last update. The days keep ticking by, with no package and no new information in the tracking system.

I now actually begin to believe that my package may take ten days to get to me, from Capitol Heights Maryland. Thirty-five miles away.

Sheesh.

I had a package shipped via USPS from the Richmond, CA depot on June 29th, with an estimated arrival date of July 16th. It's a bit more than 35 miles, but no more than a long day's drive from where I am in Tucson. On July 4th, it was tracked departing from Denver.

What is the USPS thinking these days, I wonder?

Its the rift in the space time continum. Means things that should take a day take months, and things that should take forever are done in a blink of an eye.

I think that tracking systems are a mistake. Without them, I never would have known that one of four boxes of (remaindered) books traveled from New Jersey to Maine by way of Salt Lake City...

On the other hand, I ordered something from Amazon Wednesday that I will ship on as a present on Monday and they warned me after I ordered that it probably wouldn't arrive until the 19th. It came today, Priority Mail. (But the shipper used the online shipping labels & payment from USPS.com so it didn't have to go to their post office, it just went to their depot.)

And I mailed it out today as long as I took trash and recycling out before the hordes start arriving tomorrow. I bought onesies to send to a tie-dyeing baby shower. Doesn't it sound like fun to live in Mpls?

Last summer Amazon sent me a package, in McLean, VA. Its last reported location was Capitol Heights for well over a month. Amazon was really decent about sending out a replacement as soon as I notified them, though.

The original package eventually turned up back at Amazon with a claim of 'invalid address' or some such. I know nothing about Capitol Heights, MD, but I have very little faith in their postal system.
