Alex: Where are we going?
Me: To the playground.
Alex: I want to go to the loloma.
Me: What is a loloma?
Alex: You take clothes there.
Me: Oh, a laundromat?
Alex: Yes! I want to go to the laundromat.
Me: I think the playground would probably be more fun.
Alex: No, I want to go to the laundromat.
Me: Emily and Zoe are meeting us at the playground.
Alex: They should go to the laundromat with us.
Me: Why do you want to go to the laundromat?
Alex: [...]
Me: What would we do at the laundromat?
Alex: Play and play and not go home.
Me: You want to play at the laundromat? Not the playground?
Alex: Play and play and not go home.
Me: I don't think there's anything to play with at the laundromat.
Alex: There is! They have special toys to play with.
Me: Special toys?
Alex: It's called jeans. And clothes.

Must be. I was trying to figure out how Alex would even know what a laundromat is (we have a washer and dryer), until Emily reminded me of the book.

I love it when my two year old makes recognizable literary references. My favorite was when she named her stuffed bird "Christopher Robin". It's cool to have evidence of how much she's absorbing and remembering. You never know what random bit they'll pick up on next!

Do I remember correctly? Do kids go through a phase of saying things they know are wrong/silly when they're grasping the idea of making jokes?

Yes, and we certainly get a lot of that. She didn't have her "I'm trying to be funny" demeanor during this conversation, though. And given that she's never been in a laundromat, I'm not sure she realized how inaccurate her perceptions of them are.

How is she at folding? And if I have a step stool, can she put stuff away on high closet shelves? Because if she's any good at "playing" laundry, I'll supply the quarters, soap, and several loads of laundry for a fun and productive playdate ;-)

The knuffle bunny book?

Well, they go back to the laundromat and things resolve happily... so I can see wanting to visit it.

When the local big girl was 2, the laundromat was very popular on our long walks through the neighborhood. (Well, she called them long walks. They did take a long time.) Going into the laundromat and watching the clothes go around and around in the big array of dryers was even more fun than hanging around outside the small animal clinic to talk to the kitties in carriers.

I remember parts of stories I told that just seemed *right*, and sensible. Mostly, they were wishful thinking, or thinking about how things *had* to be... maybe like I'd figured out How The World Worked.

I remember once listing all the diseases that existed, period, the end, ending with "or you're just plain old ordinary sick". I was quite certain that my medical knowledge was sufficient to become a doctor once I learned to treat "plain old ordinary sick."

Linnea LOVES the laundrette. Well, for the first couple of hours. They do have toys, and ours has a telly showing interminable Indian daytime TV type romance films which are full of dramatic moments.

I think minnaleigh's offer isn't half bad :)

Well, there you have it. Alex must have been talking to Linnea.
