Alex: (handing [livejournal.com profile] wcg a toy dinosaur.) This is Apatosaurus.
[livejournal.com profile] wcg: When I was a little boy, we called this one Brontosaurus.

(The conversation continues for a couple of minutes.)

Alex: Here's T. Rex... when I was a little boy, we called this one 'Macasaurus.'

She had a huge smile on her face when she said it. She seemed to be thinking, "Okay, if we're going to make up new names for dinosaurs, I can play along with that. And if Uncle Bill is going to say something ridiculously silly, like that he used to be a little boy, then I can play along with that, too."

It's even funnier. Here's the pertinent part of the conversation:

B: (holding up Apatasaurus) When I was a little boy, we called this one Brontosaurus.

R: Yes, we called it a Brontosaurus too.

B: But then they learned it was called A-PAT-asaurus. Because it came from Ireland, and used to hang around with A-MIKE-asaurus.

A: This is T. Rex. When I was a little boy we called this one A-MIKE-asaurus.

So yes, I was corrupting the poor innocent child with Pat and Mike jokes.

Huh. I didn't hear it that way.

Either way it was awfully funny. I think we were all making an effort to keep from laughing too hard. I know I made the silly Pat-asaurus and Mike-asaurus comment, and I thought she was echoing the later part of that back at me along with the "When *I* was a little boy," part.

Elena's latest thing is to say "That's a stegosaurus" when she knows it isn't, and then crack up hysterically.

I haven't gotten over that brontosaurus/apatasaurus re-naming either. It's just not right.

K. [and I learned of the change in MinneAPA, which of course lead to months of hilarity and confusion for all hands]

I didn't even know about the brontosaurus/apatasaurus re-naming until I read this post.

It's even worse than just "renaming." Brontosaurus never existed. They just put the wrong head on an apatosaurus skeleton. Can you believe it?

I can believe it.

And now they've fixed it, so that's a good science thing.

Hmmm. it's kind of shameful how much of contemporary news I get only via LJ. I think maybe I ought to do something about that as part of upcoming new year's resolutions.

What, nobody took the opportunity to joke about how they had one named Fido as a kid, who would fetch a stick and sit up on command?
