At long freakin' last!
Nov. 15th, 2007 11:05 amDear Dr. Wald:
Dean [Dean] has informed me that your appointment to Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Infectious Diseases Division effective July 1, 2007 has been officially approved.
Dr. [Dean] joins me in sending you our congratulations and best wishes.
Sincerely yours,
[Chairman of Medicine]
I received this today. The letter is dated October 26th (coincidentally, my birthday). It's a mere five months after my application packet was officially complete, three months after I started getting paid at my new rate, two months after I got my faculty ID badge, and six weeks after I completed New Faculty Orientation.
So there you are. No matter what happens next - whether the grant gets funded or not, whether I decide to stay in academia or not - I have officially achieved faculty rank. Yay.

Date: 2007-11-15 09:32 pm (UTC)Because my grant application may be funded, NIH has asked me to provide what they call "just in time" information - it mostly boils down to more financial details, documentation that all key personnel have had ethics training, and IRB (human subjects) approval.
The only big deal there is the IRB approval - I have to go through the whole application process for a project which may never be funded. My current registration with the IRB, as research staff, allows me to edit protocols but not actually create or submit one myself. And the IRB refused to give me creation/submission powers without a signed faculty appointment letter. So getting the letter today really was a deus ex machina.

Date: 2007-11-16 05:20 am (UTC)We're only required to do the ethics board submission once we've been funded (but we need to do it to access our funding).
