Socks with holes in them.
A pair of big fluffy polartec socks in a weird garish print, received as a gift years ago and never taken out of the package.
Ugly free promotional T-shirts.
A lipstick, still in an unopened package, from before I met Michael.
A sweater I got in high school, which is still in good shape only because I haven't worn it in years.

I got rid of all but three of the T-shirts I've had since college. Since college. I graduated in 1994.

...It's kind of pathetic that I'm still holding onto three, isn't it?

Edited to add: OMG. Condoms that expired in 1998. (Don't worry - no one's been using them.)

Not pathetic at all, IMO. :) Especially if they have great sentimental value or you still wear them a lot.

You've inspired me to look at my closet and do a cull... I have tons of t-shirts, and since I work in an office now, I hardly wear them. (I also have not much closet space.) I could send a whackload to the Diabetes or Cystic Fibrosis foundation.

<goes off to ponder>

No. Everyone has a few favorites. I have one from my stepfather that was 15 years old when I got it 10 years ago. And another that is from highschool. My freshman year in HS. I'm 35 BTW.

That is OK. I got rid of all the OTHER ones though. A couple of keepsakes is fine. A horde is totally different :)

I don't think it's at all pathetic that you're holding onto three, and it's also clear you're doing a great job on the decluttering!

That actually was my favorite part about moving. After 20 years at Toad Hall, well, this accumulator had accumulated...a lot. I was paying for the move out of my own pocket, which added to the motivation to lighten the load. If I really, really wanted to keep it, I did. But I also enjoyed revisiting memories and saying a fond farewell to lots of neat stuff that I just didn't emotionally have to bring with me.

Even after discarding a few tons of stuff, I still managed to fill a 1,900 square foot home and 2-car garage by myself. Scary, that. Four years later, and it's time for another decluttering.

One of the best decisions I've ever made was to start ruthlessly rejecting socks with holes. There's no reason to put up with it, especially since I only wear one sock at a time.

All that stuff goes in a rag pile, though, so I don't get the pleasure of actually having less stuff cluttering my life.

I still have one T-shirt from college, and I graduated in 1976...

I've been slowly getting rid of old t-shirts. You'd think it would be easy; I never wear t-shirts.

Isn't throwing stuff out awesome?

I finally went through _my_ college t-shirts collection about two years ago and threw out the vast majority of them. I kept more than three, though, because I use them to work out/sleep in, but it was still terribly therapeutic.

Ahem. We're in a a similar de-cluttering phase at the moment, not because we're moving, but because we failed to de-clutter enough when we last moved. (U-hauls hold a lot of stuff!) I just found a shirt which I suspect may even date from high school. It's definitely from the big shirt era, late '80's maybe? I can't believe I ever wore it, let alone kept it so long. *hangs head in shame*

So yeah, no judgment from this quarter :)

Condoms that expired in 1998
Don't pitch those yet - they're great OWL training aids, especially if they've noticeably deteriorated. After you show the youth a nice fresh condom, and talk about the importance of checking the expiration date, you can pull out one of those long-expired ones and demonstrate just what can go wrong.

Last time I cleaned out my T-shirt stash, I found SO MANY that I couldn't bear to part with, so I ended up making a T-shirt quilt. A freakin' huge king-sized (at least) T-shirt quilt. It was a nightmare to make - but it's got so much cool stuff there!

Actually, [livejournal.com profile] rivka - I am Teh Expert at breaking condoms with vaseline. I used to do it as part of the what-kind-of-lube-should-you-use discussion. I'd put the condom (a new one) over one hand, whip out some Vaseline and smear some on and start rubbing my hands together. I could break a condom - often quite *dramatically* - in less than 30 seconds, usually. It always made a big impression. :)

(If you decide to do this, definitely do practice at home a few times first to get the hang of it.)

Didn't I sleep under that quilt?

Yes you did - it's on our guest bed, along with a vintage quilt of indeterminate origin (via my mother-in-law).

I intend to do something like this with all my fencing t-shirts. I cut the logos out and store them. Eventually I will hem them all and quilt them together.

I have a Sunbonnet Girl quilt on my workroom wall that was made by my grandmother and all the Girl fabric is from my mother's clothes as a child. When I was a little girl, it was on my bed and my mother would tell me a story about a piece of clothing every night. A few months ago I gave my brother and his family the Scripture Verse quilt that our great-grandmother made -- I'll never have room to put it up here and I wouldn't want it on a bed with the cats -- because they've finally settled down and want family things.

Save them! It would be great to have an expired condom or two for our OWL class!
