Probably no one is reading this because of The Big LJ Strike, but I cannot refrain from posting about two things I just read in the Baltimore Sun:

ZOMG baby elephant!!

A BABY ELEPHANT was just born at the Maryland Zoo! ZOMG baby elephant!! Look at that curly little trunk!! And we're going to get to visit the baby elephant all the time because we are zoo members!

Could he possibly be any cuter?

And, going from the sublime to the ridiculous, this unfortunate headline:

"Teen accused of killing family to undergo psychiatric evaluation."

...Doesn't that seem a bit excessive? I mean, had he thought of just presenting himself at the emergency room and asking for one? Or, like, saving up for the price of a visit?

Cool!

I don't think we're going to get any more baby elephants here: they've concluded that they don't really have enough space for elephants, so they're not going to be breeding them, or bringing new ones in, just keeping the three that currently live in the Bronx for the remainder of their natural lives.

The Maryland Zoo made a really nice decision several years ago to greatly reduce their total number of animals and greatly increase/improve the amount and quality of the space the animals live in.

I'm looking forward to a zoo membership around here. We'll probably get one for the Central Florida Zoo and one for Sea World (which is actually quite reasonable considering it's a theme park) so that there are plenty of places to go and see animals and what not.

When did Alex really start enjoying the zoo?

When did Alex really start enjoying the zoo?

Very early. We got a membership the summer after she turned one, and didn't regret it one bit. We skipped over a lot of the enclosures, because at that age she couldn't visually pick out an animal that was far away or that blended into its habitat, but there were still plenty of animals she could see. And she loved it.

Is there a children's museum or science museum near you? Because it's a really good idea to have one membership to an air-conditioned place, for those 100-degree-plus days when your kid wants to run and run.

Eventually, I mean. Having places like that really becomes crucial once your kid is walking. Before then, what helps your sanity most is places you can go to meet other moms with similarly-aged kids. Does your local library do an infant story hour? Those are the best.

It's Wednesday mornings at ten. I'm also close enough to two other county library systems that going to an event at one of them wouldn't be too difficult assuming I don't have a car-hating child. Unfortunately, I'm not close enough to anything but the small playground in our neighborhood to walk safely.

That is a near-fatal dose of cute right there.

And someone needs to tell that headline author that their participle is dangling... perhaps they'd like to excuse themselves and adjust it?

Our elephants retired and moved to California. I read they're very happy! The Zoo membership was one of the best things we ever bought when Coral came along. Not only is it great to go whenever we want (it helps that it's not even a mile from us), but it is also fab when we're out of town and take advantage of zoo membership reciprocity.

*squeee!*

He is so adorable! We sat and watched the elephants at the zoo last weekend for a half hour – I’m sure the boys would love to see a BABY!

Ok, I just read the visiting info in the article. I was all set to pack everybody in the car tomorrow to go…

When he's ready to be seen, we'd love to have you come up and go to the zoo with us!

Y'know, I managed to avoid getting the Henry Mancini tune stuck in my head all the way down the page until I got to your comment ...

That little elephant is indeed cute. I think I shall have to go see him sometime this spring, after he makes his public debut.

Cute cute! And your comment on the headline is cute in a different sense.

Why do I have a vamp going in my head? I mean, the beat is groovy (http://jacquedee63.com/babyelephantwalk.html), but...
