This morning's excuse: "I'm too sick to go to school because my heart is pumping my blood in the wrong direction."

I offered to take her straight to the hospital. She declined.

Well, you must admit that if she had been able to carry it off convincingly it would've gotten her out of school for the day.

She is very clever.

...that must be tiring sometimes. :)

I do, but it isn't always easy.

You wait until you get to "I can't go to school because I have to finish Mirror Dance, and I'd just spend all day wondering where that cryochamber is and not learn anything anyway!"

Specially crafted to work on me, that one.

I suppose saying "Off to school now, or I'll tell you where the cryochamber went and you'll still have to go to school" might be considered child abuse.

We fairly often offer to cut offending limbs off or go to hospital. It works.

I hope mine never think of blood going the wrong way. We've had lung troubles before but nothing that...

...

...peculiar.

Is she perhaps secretly African? When I was growing up, we had a refugee teenager from Mozambique living with us, who perplexed my mother greatly by telling her that his illness was "the blood running up and down my main vein."

When I was growing up, "main vein" was generally considered a euphemism for "penis". "Draining the main vein" was a euphemism for urination, so having blood running up and down the "main vein" would certainly be cause for alarm!

I have to say that were it to stop, then I'd find it alarming.

Oh, she's just brilliant isn't she?!

But that totally sounds like the description I'd give of what it feels like when I'm anxious. Yep.

I hope she feels better soon :)

How does Alex relate Niblet's birth to her own? She understands that you've been through this process once before, and it produced her, and that turned out all right?

Another thought: maybe she's not so much anxious about the birth and the disruption it'll cause, but just anxious that she's going to miss it all? Not so much separation anxiety (or whatever), maybe premiere anxiety (to coin a phrase). Having waited a substantial proportion of her life for this event, she just doesn't want to be elsewhere when it all starts to happen. What an anti-climax it would be if she got home one day and found it had all happened without her.
