Here's how tired I am today:

- I went to a meeting at the church, left my diaper bag there, and didn't even notice that I didn't have it until someone called to tell me so.

- I decided to pump breastmilk while Colin napped. I connected all the tubing, turned the pump on, and hooked myself up. It took a good 30 seconds for me to realize that I hadn't attached any bottles to hold the milk.

Clearly I should not be trusted with anything of importance, except that I need to write the talk I'm giving on Friday in Montreal.

Let's hear it for newborns and exhaustion. Hang in there. I was so tired at one point this past week that I almost forgot to put a diaper back on the baby....and given that my sole purpose had been to change the baby's diaper at that moment, it says a lot. :)

I'm curious about what your feeding schedule is like. Rachel is almost 4 weeks old now and I'm still doing 'on demand' feeding. Do you do the same? Or do you schedule the feedings?

Yes, I am feeding Colin on demand and am planning to continue to do so indefinitely. I figure that he knows more about his needs than some doctor somewhere who wrote a book. ;-) (But seriously: schedule feeding of breastfed babies has been linked to declines in milk production and failure to thrive. Demand feeding is strongly recommended by the AAP.)

At 4 weeks, he was nursing almost all the time that he was awake - or at least it seemed that way. Now he has more quiet-alert and active-alert periods when he is awake and interactive and not eating. I'd say that during the day he eats for 10-30 minutes every two hours. At night he usually sleeps for one 4-hour stretch and then some two-hour stretches, but when he's gearing up for a growth spurt it's every two hours round the clock. It's a good thing I can nurse while sleeping while sitting upright against the headboard.)
