It's a mean, petty thing, but I confess that I'm kind of looking forward to being able to say "the late Christine Maggiore" when I give my talk on Friday.

(I'm putting up a screenshot from Maggiore's organization's website to illustrate what I mean by "HIV conspiracy theories," in case there are people in the audience who aren't HIV specialists and haven't encountered that stuff before.)

...Huh. I went looking for a link describing Maggiore's death, and found that aidstruth.org obtained a copy of her death certificate, which is public information. She died of disseminated herpes viral infection, bilateral bronchial pneumonia, and oral candadiasis. Conditions you would totally expect to find in a healthy 52-year-old, right? Which is why the denialists are trying to claim that she didn't die of AIDS.

Oh, this all makes me so ill.

Well, at least she won't have the opportunity to murder any more kids.

Not directly, anyhow.

She leaves a legacy of willful ignorance that may take more lives down the line.

Sad truth, there.

A lot of people who can't believe they have whatever it is end up as major deniers. At least she can't do it in person anymore.

Some of them manage to leave it at "I don't have AIDS|cancer|lupus|MS" rather than going on to try to convince themselves and the world that, in fact, whichever of those they are emphatically not having is caused by green rays from Venus or something.

I'm having a hard time believing that anyone could be so sunk in denial as to jeopardize the lives of her children like that. I missed your April 2007 post at the time, but HOLY CRAP. How could a reasonably intelligent person be so willfully ignorant? And don't even get me started on her whine about why did she have to lose her child, when those evil parents force-feeding their kids junk food don't end up with dead children instead.

I remember reading about her some time ago and thinking she was rather around the bend... I'm very sad to hear that her daughter paid the price for her mother's willful denial. :(

But she was RIGHT. RIGHT to the end. And will continue having been RIGHT...

no matter what the facts say.
