AAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGHHHHH!!!!

On the evening of her second day of employment, our nanny called to tell us that a relative has offered her a full-time job. She's giving us two weeks' notice.

I am devastated.

She was great. Totally competent and professional and warm and a nice person. The other person we interviewed who seemed good and competent wasn't legal to work in the US, which is something I'm not willing to deal with.

Now we have to start over. I can't believe we have to start over. Can I just slit my wrists instead?

We may have to try an agency this time, but I'm afraid that will be too expensive. But that may be our only fast-enough turnaround. I'm also going to e-mail around to our friends, see if anyone has a recommendation. And re-run the Craigslist ad, I guess.

I HATE THIS SO MUCH.

Oh God, I'm sorry. Child care problems suck.

Also, two weeks notice is not enough, and that extra-sucks. We wrote a month's notice into our nanny contract, because finding a new one is so damned hard.

Well, second day. It's acceptable to back out on the job in the first week.

I would say, only for compatability issues or the job turning out not to be as advertised. Not because you got a better offer.

I don't know. I know it sucks for you, but if she needs a full-time income, it's hard to fault her for taking the opportunity when it comes. At least she's giving notice

[identity profile] wcg.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh damn, what a disappointment. I'm sorry you have to go through the process all over again.

[identity profile] jonquil.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
OH, NO. That is simply unfair. (And horrible. Two weeks' notice in this particular circumstance is gross. I'm sorry.)

ARRGH. Big hugs and so very, very sorry.

OMG, that sucks. I'm so sorry.

Oh. No. She. Didn't.

I seethe on your behalf.

[identity profile] chargirlgenius.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, god. I'm so sorry. You have my sympathies, I know what a pain that is. She *was* great. She no longer is. In my experience, this has been a blessing in disguise.

But that's flipping awful.

Oh, no!

I am wishing for compensatory good fortune to find you.

That is horrible! I am so sorry. :(

Have you checked out sittercity.com? We've had good luck finding some good people through there.

I also had great luck with http://www.greataupair.com. It's free, and people were contacting us within the hour I posted.

P.S. Hi, [livejournal.com profile] rivka! I added you to my FL at the recommendation of some excellent people ([livejournal.com profile] geminigirl, for one). Don't feel pressured to return the gesture or anything; just wanted you to know how I found you. :)

That's crappy. I'm so sorry. I hope you find an even better nanny in short order.

[identity profile] minnehaha.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch.

I'm sorry. That sucks.

Good luck.

OMG. I see your ARGH. I am so sorry. So, very, sorry.

I wish I could help. I can just offer sympathy and understanding from here.

[identity profile] acceberskoorb.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
SO not ok. I'm so sorry to hear this news, it must be the sad, cold essence of frustration. You would think I would have a great suggestion in my pocket for this occasion, but sadly I do not.

*hugs*

Ugh, I am SOOOO sorry.

Another thought - IF you didn't mind someone living in, an au pair could be very cost effective for you for two kids. It is more care hours than you need, but you can use them for whatever you want. One big bonus of au pairs is that they are not allowed to get another job just like that. they can decide to leave, of course, but there is a much longer process, and the agency will help you find another au pair.

And another bonus is that you can select someone with foreign language skills.

Big downside is that it would take more than two weeks to find someone through the au pair program. The fastest is a rematch with someone already in country, and that would take a month or so.

Just a thought.

Wow. If she does something like that, it's probably better you're rid of her. that is really unreliable and unprofessional.
