I almost never drive to work because parking is such an issue. But today I had my shrink appointment, so I drove. Came back and parked across the street from my office. This is a major thoroughfare, no rush hour parking allowed, and many's the time I've seen tow trucks lined up at the corner at 3:55, waiting to tow the unpunctual or unwary.

But I figured, no problem, I'd move my car by four. It was the only spot I could find, anyway.

I went in to work. Drama happened. Extensively. I did my best to negotiate around the drama without getting any stuck to me. I pumped. I did some work. At 4:30, I packed up my things and, as I always do, walked briskly to the light rail. I was a block away from the light rail stop when I remembered that I had driven to work, and where I had left my car.

Futilely, I turned around and walked all the way back, just on the tiniest million-to-one chance that it hadn't yet been towed. Of course it had. I trudged back to the light rail. Two trains roared past, one after the other, while I was a block or so away.

I stood on the platform, dejected. As I waited for the next train, the temperature dropped by about fifteen degrees. Black clouds rolled in on the chilly wind. Lightning flickered, first in the distance, then quite close up. The first drops of rain fell just as I got on the train. By the time I got off, lightning was flashing all around, thunder close at its heels, chilly needles of rain whipping in as I struggled to keep the wind from blowing the umbrella out of my hand.

Awfully convenient thunderstorm. If my life were a book, I would be rolling my eyes right now and muttering about the pathetic fallacy.

Was it a generalised storm, or just a small one which hovered over you and followed you home?

(I hope getting the car back is as painless as possible given the bureaucracy and expense these things involve as normal).

Now, we had the exact same thunderstorm here in Manassas and I was safe inside. My doctor visit showed an enlarged heart, so we can't equate the storm to bad news or bad health.

I drove home through the same storm.

I'm really, truly, genuinely sorry about your car. Parking in downtown Baltimore is a damned nightmare.

I did the same thing shortly after returning to work after #1 was born.

Drove instead of walking, totally meant to move the car by 4, but got caught up in work drama and ended up late.

So I feel your pain.

I think I got rained on, too.

So there's a local deity just waiting for that particular opportunity?

<glingle glingle>

Ooops.

Wow, that sucks. Aren't subconscious autopilots great, right up until they really, really aren't?

*eyes the drama warily* Shoo.

I've had similar sorts of events. May you get the thing out of hock without too much trouble.

Oh, sweetie. That sounds like a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

*You* are awesome. The day sucked. I'm glad you made it through and lived to tell the tale.

Got up in the morning. Opened the front door to get the newspaper off of the front porch, and noticed that the driveway was empty. Looked up and down the street to see if my husband had parked the car on the street for some reason.

Began to panic.

Realized that I drove to work the day before, and took the bus home. Oops. Fortunately, I'd parked in the lot across from my office, where the guys know me.

I've wanted to have words with the person writing the script for my life a time or two...

laugh...Yep, I've done that before. Felt like a couple of kinds of idiot afterward. I'm functioning on so little sleep and such currently that I've started consciously asking myself every time I leave a place, "Do you have the baby?"

I'm hoping that in a few months my brain will wander home, and after I give it an intense scolding for abandoning me and going pub crawling, that it will resume it's usual responsible and on-top-of-things behavior....after it sobers up.

And pumping, sucks. :)

[livejournal.com profile] pauamma recommended that I point you at a fun APA Style vs. Internet Reality moment that I stumbled across in the course of researching something mostly unrelated.
